Fire King Crocosmia

Fire King Crocosmia

Fiery flowers that command attention.

The Fire King Crocosmia, otherwise known as Crocosmia crocosmiiflora, has gracefully arching stems that bear a multitude of tubular orange florets that mature to an intense red and form an attractive sword-shaped foliage. Gather loads for unique indoor arrangements.

How do you Plant Fire King Crocosmia?

Fire King Crocosmia bulbs thrive in soil that is moderately fertile, humus rich, and well drained, making it an easy-to-grow plant. It requires consistent moisture throughout the growing season. In regions with colder climates, it's advisable to either apply a generous layer of mulch over the crocosmia bed during autumn, or dig up the bulbs and store them indoors for the winter.

When do you Cut Back Fire King Crocosmia?

Fire King Crocosmia typically requires one to two years to establish itself, transforming into a sturdy plant that steadily grows in size. After the flower clusters of the crocosmia have fully bloomed and withered, trim the stems to the point where they meet the foliage, enabling the leaves to keep growing. This practice promotes the emergence of fresh crocosmia blooms during the season. Once the leaves have perished, prune them back and clear away any debris.

How do you Care for Fire King Crocosmia?

Fire King Crocosmia bulbs don't require much maintenance once they are planted. Typically, they need approximately 1" of water per week during the growing season. Using mulch can effectively manage weed growth and help the soil retain moisture. To ensure continuous blooming from your crocosmias, trim off any faded flowers where they meet the foliage. It is important to allow the foliage to naturally wither, as the leaves provide nourishment to the bulbs for the next year. After the leaves have been spent, they can be pruned back. Any debris should be cleared away.
