Delosperma echinatum "Pickle Plant" Description
This unusual plant produces succulent leaves with translucent white bristles that grow in pairs on wiry, spiny stalks. Because these plump leaves resemble fuzzy gherkins, Delosperma echinatum is commonly called the pickle plant. While most of its stems spread like a mat on the soil, this prostrate shrub from South Africa can still reach 12–18" in height. It can be grown outside year-round in zones 7–10 but only during warm-weather months in cooler climes. This plant prefers receiving full sun but can tolerate some shade. Yields small, yellow blooms during spring. Ships in a 1.5" Ellepot made from degradable paper.
