Easy-Care Salvias in "Attractive" Shades
Known for attracting a wide range of pollinators, salvias are must-haves for ecoconscious gardeners. Native bees, honey bees, butterflies and hummingbirds are all lured to the netcar-filled flower spikes, which will appear for several months above aromatic foliage. Most of the world's flowering plants depend on these winged pollinators whose numbers have declined in recent years.
So Many Salvias…
Salvia is the largest genus of plants in the mint family, and its hundreds of species can vary widely. The name salvia is derived from the Latin salvere, which means "to be well and in good health," referring to its earliest role as a healing herb. Today, ornamental salvias have a task that's just as important— bringing beneficial pollinators back to American gardens.
Vigorous, Vibrant and Versatile
Salvia is drought resistant and easy to grow in any well-drained location— even coastal areas where sea spray or salty soil is prevalent. Its relatively short height and long flowering time make it an excellent option for containers and borders. In fact, we've found salvia to be one of the very best compact sun perennials!
The four salvias chosen for this new collection are perennial varieties, so they are winter hardy in zones 3–8. Each one will bloom in a different vibrant shade from summer to frost. The compact plants can be cut back in midsummer when they start to look tired, then new foliage and flowers will appear in just a few weeks. Although your Salvia Collection will be irresistible to pollinators, hungry deer and rabbits will leave it alone. Just choose a sunny spot for planting and watch them go! Salvia nemerosa
