Iris Anatomy 101
With literally thousands of variations of tall bearded iris in the world, it helps to identify these beautiful blossoms by their three main parts:
Standards: The three upper iris petals that stand at attention, curving to meet each other at their highest point. Standards can be ruffled or lacy, solid or multicoloured.
Beards: The fuzzy flower accents that look like colourful caterpillars! Beards not only give the bearded iris its name, they help guide pollinators to the treasure trove of nectar inside.
Falls: Often a contrasting colour to the standards, the falls consist of three downward curving petals that highlight the beards and complete the distinctive iris look!
This iris collection includes one each of the following varieties:
- Florentine Silk: This abundant bloomer has a rare colour combination of blue and pink, excellent broad form and plenty of ruffles. It's easy to see why Florentine Silk iris flowers have already won two prestigious awards from the American Iris Society. Grows 40" tall.
- Redneck Girl: Its saturated dark red falls flare beneath dusky purple-red standards and blue beards to create a regal, velvety appearance. Large, 6" flowers open from 6-7 socketed buds on two-branch stems. Grows 36" tall.
- I Pink I Can: Here's a gently ruffled, award-winning iris bulbs in a delicious shade of cotton candy pink that brings brio to any garden bed or border. Its red beards and deeper pink shading in the middle of the falls add to its sweetness. Yields eight flowers per stem. Grows 28" tall.
- Fall Fiesta:Festive and vibrant, these ruffled flowers feature deep golden-yellow falls accented with rich amber-tan tones. Atop are elegant, snowy white standards with soft yellow highlights and glittering gold beards. Grows 36" tall.
- Drifting: This bicolour variety possesses large, 6" blooms with billowy white standards and regally ruffled, royal blue falls. A past winner of the Florence International Iris Competition. Grows 40" tall.
