Horatio Goatsbeard Description

With its fern-patterned leaves that transform from green to russet red in the fall, and its sprays of creamy white, astilbe-like panicles that turn brown as the florets fade, this elegant herbaceous perennial puts on an extended, glorious colour show year in and year out. The airy inflorescence of showy, star-shaped plumes arrives in early summer, growing horizontally on upright, bronze-hued stems above a handsome, shrubby habit that reaches 3--5' tall at maturity. This goatsbeard can be grown under all light conditions, from full sun to partial shade to full shade. Note that when planted under the sun, it requires more water; when grown in the shade, it produces a more open habit. Excellent for use in borders and foundation plantings. Unappetizing to deer and rabbits. Hybridized by renowned German plant breeder Ernst Pagels.
