Many of our Dutch summer-flowering bulbs can be planted in early spring, after the chance of frost, and will begin blooming from early to late summer, depending on the variety. Most summer-blooming bulbs generally prefer full sun, well-drained sandy or loamy soil, and some soil dressing. Many of our spring bulbs are hardy in zones 4 to 9, but be sure check the hardiness zones for individual cultivars.
Spring is perhaps the easiest time to plant a garden, but planning ahead can allow you to take the time to fully explore your options. By planting summer-blooming bulbs in the spring, you allow for more considered creativity and can choose to paint wide swaths of certain colours or create small oases of mixed blooms. Consider whether you'd prefer a smooth gradient of shades or a riot of boisterous colour. Finally, spring planting lets you create a smooth transition from one season to the next.
Create a dazzling, long lasting summer garden by planting a variety of flowers with varying bloom times. Start with early summer-blooming bulbs like fragrant daffodils and Dutch iris. Other spring bulbs like cyclamen and orchids will wow you in mid to late summer. For gorgeous colour all summer long, look to long lasting flowers like hollyhock and ranunculus. Elephant ears and other foliage plants also create dramatic backgrounds throughout the season. Finish out the season with late summer and fall blooms like ranunculus and dahlias. Create your own unique portrait of the perfect garden with our summer-flowering bulbs.
