With their abundance of broad, verdant foliage and vibrant, long-blooming flowers, dwarf cannas add a tropical touch to garden borders, beds and container gardens all summer long—and even into fall! The colourful blooms draw butterflies and hummingbirds to the landscape, but foraging deer and rabbits usually leave the plants alone.
Most flowers can't take the heat of late July and early August, but that's when dwarf cannas thrive. While these compact, tropical American plants fare best in sunny areas and well-drained earth, they grow fine in the boggy soil often found near ponds and streams. What's more, after the flowers finally fade, they simply fall away—so, no need for deadheading.
