When to Plant Bare Root Roses

Plant bare root roses during their dormant period, typically between late fall and early spring, when the risk of frost has passed and the soil is workable.

How to Plant Bare Root Roses

Soak the roots in water for at least an hour (but no more than 12 hours) just before planting. Dig a hole large enough to accommodate the spread of the roots, set the plant so that the bud union is just above the soil line, backfill with soil, and water thoroughly. If planting must be delayed, open the plastic bag your roses are in and cover the roots with damp newspaper to keep them moist. Partially close the plastic bag, and store in a cool, sheltered area away from sun and wind. Keep the newspaper/roots moist until you are ready to plant.

How Often to Water Bare Root Roses After Planting

Roses require the equivalent of 1" of rainfall each week. They will bloom best if their roots are kept moist but not waterlogged. Water thoroughly—a slow, deep soak at the ground is most efficient. Don't water from above—avoid getting foliage wet, as this can encourage disease problems.

What to Do with Bare Root Roses When They Arrive from Breck's

When your bare root roses arrive from Breck's, follow these simple steps to ensure they get a healthy start.
Inspect and Soak: Check the roses for damage and soak the roots in water for 1-12 hours to rehydrate them prior to planting.
Store Properly: If you can't plant immediately, store them in a cool, dark place, or temporarily bury the roots in moist soil. The rose roots must be kept moist and cool at all times prior to planting.
Prepare for Planting: Before planting, enrich the planting site with compost to improve soil quality. These steps help ensure your roses get a healthy start.
