Turk's Cap Lily Collection

Turk's Cap Lily Collection

An American favourite for generations

Their remarkable flower form may give Turk's cap lilies an exotic look, but they actually were some of the first lilies ever grown in American gardens, found in descriptions dating all the way back to 1596! Early American gardeners had the right idea— Turk's caps are an excellent investment. Many lilies fade away within four years, but these beauties are just getting started. In fact, a Turk's cap lily, left undisturbed, can last a lifetime!

Our Turk's Cap Lily Collection features four of our most vigorous and most colourful varieties. They'll thrive in darker corners of your landscape and make an excellent addition to a lighter woodland garden. The bulbs are hardy enough to withstand the freezing cold winters of the U.S. The extremely recurved petals of the down-facing, exotic-looking blooms not only make the flowers very appealing to people, but also to bees, butterflies and hummingbirds.

The Perfect Form
An elegant scene unfolds in the summer, when vibrant butterflies and buzzing bees explore sweet-smelling Turk's cap lilies in bloom. The plant form is enchanting—perfectly balanced with masses of unique, downward-facing blooms, featuring extremely recurved petals. Most notable are its gorgeous, long stamens, which are also extremely useful for the plant. They are strong enough to easily withstand the weight of bees who stop by. Also, when a hungry butterfly sneaks into the bloom for a snack, the anthers are in the perfect position to deposit pollen on its wings.

MORE BEES, PLEASE!
When it comes to beneficial pollinators, we generally think of honey bees. These hardworking helpers, originally imported from Europe, love Turk's cap lilies and all the nectar their abundant blooms provide. However, Turk's cap bring some other major players to your garden, too!

  • As a native species, Turk's caps are loved by native bees—providing a sweet treat for those fluttering friends whose hard work sustains diversity in our environment and diet.

  • Butterflies are attracted to vibrant, fragrant flowers with unusual forms—so as much as you'll love this new collection's vivid, warm hues and sweet wildflower perfume, the butterflies who stop by will be just as pleased!

  • Beneficial pollinators will be in heaven with all of the blooms Breck's® Turk's Cap Lily Collection provides. On a mature plant, you'll see anywhere from a dozen up to 50 intricate, graceful blooms!

Traditionally, Turk's caps bloom in orange with black speckles. But with Breck's® Turk's Cap Lily Collection, you'll get a variety of stunning hues! They grow 3 to 4 feet tall, the perfect height for adding colour and life to that bare space between perennials and deciduous shrubs. With a light requirement of sun to part shade, they thrive in darker spots than typical full-sun lilies, and make an excellent addition to a lighter woodland garden. Incredibly hardy, 12–14 cm bulbs will withstand the freezing cold North American winters all the way up to zone 2!

This collection includes three each of the following varieties:

  • Lady Alice: Thick stems grow to 5' tall, each one supporting up to 20 flowers when grown from established bulbs. Recurved petals are pure white with yellow-orange centres and raised, dark red spots. Lilium aurelian x trumpet

  • Black Beauty: Flowers are showy red with crimson speckles and white edges. Deeply reflexed petals cause its elegant anthers to protrude and showcase its green, star-shaped centre. Lilium OT-hybrid

  • Henryi: Flowers bloom in clusters of 10-20 on slender, green to purple stems clad with narrow, deep green leaves up to 6" long. The nodding, light orange, 2" flowers of this award winner have maroon flecks, dark orange anthers and sharply recurved petals. Lilium
