Coastal Breeze Phlox

This Breck's exclusive displays a unique colour gradation.

This enchanting perennial greets summer with masses of bicoloured tubular blooms, each a dreamy blend of lavender-blue gently diffusing into pure white. Coastal Breeze creates an ethereal display that's perfect for butterfly gardens, mixed borders and naturalistic meadow plantings. The plants form branching clusters of delicate, 1" flowers and reach up to 36" tall. An absolute magnet for honeybees, butterflies and other beneficial pollinators, this vigorous cultivar thrives when planted in groups along pathways or as a soft backdrop to lower-growing perennials. Its long-lasting blooms make excellent cut flowers, bringing their subtle colour gradient and sweet fragrance indoors, while the sturdy plants maintain their impressive shape and continue flowering throughout the season when deadheaded regularly.

About the Breeder

Located in charming Hillegom, The Netherlands, the Geerlings-Meyer nursery was established in 1958 by Piet Geerlings and his wife, Alida Meyer. Initially, Piet purchased and resold flower bulbs to customers in the U.K., but later began growing his own bulbs. His son, Antoon Geerlings, took over the business and shifted the focus entirely to cultivation.

In 1975, the nursery expanded its offerings to include perennials. A few years later, Antoon's sons, Antoon Jr. and Peter, joined the family business. Peter eventually switched exclusively from growing flower bulbs to perennials in 1997. Eight years later, he began breeding phlox. Since then, he has introduced many more varieties of the flower, including Anastasia, Cleopatra, Larissa, Zenobia, Olympus and Coastal Breeze. Today, under Peter's leadership, the nursery's phlox collection has grown to nearly 140 different varieties, making it his main crop.

Peter chose to specialize in phlox because he loves the yearly display of flowers and the distinct clusters that grow on the stems. When selecting new cultivars, he prioritizes innovative flower colors, unique flower structures (like with Cleopatra) and improved disease resistance.
