Marie Lemoine Peony

Spectacular 19th-century French import.

Introduced in 1869, this richly fragrant heirloom variety is widely regarded as one of the handsomest peonies. Very large, lemon-white double flowers are strongly suffused with yellow from hidden stamens and staminodes when they open. They then change to pure white. Flat at first, the 6½" blooms develop into large balls. Glossy, deep green leaves are quite attractive during the growing season.

  • Planting InstructionsDig a hole large enough to spread out roots without bending them. Set crown with buds 1-2" below ground-level. Water in thoroughly. When planted in Fall: plant at least 6 weeks before ground freezes.

  • PruningRemove spent flower stems after flowering to maintain an attractive bush type perennial all summer long.
  • Winter CareNone, except to mulch the first winter. Remove in early spring before growth starts.
