About the Hybridizer
Christian Bédard has been immersed in plant breeding from an early age, learning the fundamentals from his family while growing up in Québec City. Today, he is one of Breck’s most respected hybridizers, known equally for his exceptional work with both irises and roses. His deep knowledge is put to practical use during Breck’s iris trials in California and Ohio, where only the strongest and most distinctive varieties earn a place in our offerings.
As an iris breeder, Christian is meticulous and patient. He evaluates potential introductions for years—often close to a decade—focusing on stem strength, reblooming ability, refined form, bud count, fragrance, vigour and disease resistance before approving a variety that truly stands apart.Christian’s reputation as a rose breeder is just as impressive. He has received the American Rose Society’s Award of Excellence six times, most recently in 2023 for two stunning varieties: Life’s Little Pleasures™ Miniflora Rose and Midnight Fire™ Miniature Rose. His roses are prized for their beauty, fragrance and resilience, reflecting a rigorous selection process and a deep respect for the plant.
With a Bachelor of Science in Biology and a Master’s degree in Plant Genetics from the University of Montreal, Christian combines academic training with hands-on experience. A passionate educator and ambassador for roses, he regularly shares his expertise through writing, media appearances and public speaking—bringing his love of breeding to gardeners everywhere.
