About the Hybridizer
For more than half a century, Breck's has proudly partnered with the Ammerlaan family of Breezand, a village in the province of North Holland renowned the world over for its ideal flower bulb-growing conditions. Today, Theo Ammerlaan continues that legacy alongside his son Bart and nephew Stan—two members of a new generation of Dutch growers dedicated to innovation and quality. At their family nursery, C.Th. Ammerlaan, tulips are more than just a crop—they’re a craft. While bulb growing has been part of the Ammerlaan heritage for generations, in-house breeding began about 30 years ago.
Theo and his family combine time-honoured techniques with modern breeding methods to develop tulips that are truly distinctive. Rather than selecting for common traits alone, they look for the extraordinary: unique colour patterns, refined flower forms, vigorous growth and dependable garden performance. Each new seedling is carefully observed over several years, and only a small number earn the right to carry the Ammerlaan name. From the trial fields of Breezand to gardens across North America, Theo’s tulips represent more than three decades of patient refinement and creative vision—living proof that tradition and innovation can thrive beautifully side by side.
