Happy Kings Day

Happy King's Day!

This event is Holland's biggest national holiday - people all over Holland dress in orange and participate in a day of parades, music and merrymaking on their monarch's birthday.

King Willem-Alexander is turning 48 today -and he's the fourth monarch whose birthday has been marked by an annual nationwide party. The holiday was first observed in 1985 as Princess' Day, to celebrate the birthday of Princess Wilhelmina, heir to the Dutch throne. It was held on her birthday - August 31 - until her daughter ascended to the throne in 1948. From 1948 to 2013, the celebration occured on April 30, celebrating first Queen Juliana and then Queen Beatrix, Willem-Alexander's mother. Willem-Alexander succeeded Beatrix and became the first king of the Netherlands in 123 years! He brought a new name - King's Day - as well as as new date - April 23rd - to the already-beloved celebration.

King's Day festivities include something for everyone - huge flea markets, concerts, and speeches and tours by the royals bring out throngs of people. Some of these partygoers dress head-to-toe in orange, Holland's national color (you'll also see orange clothing during international sporting events, especially international soccer tournaments).

All this national pride is certainly something to experience - and we'd love for you to be here! Be sure to enter our contest to win a trip to Holland and experience King's Day firsthand!
