Description

Fall-flowering crocus offers outstanding late-season colour! Beautiful lavender blooms are highlighted by red stigmas. Very unique! The stigmas are also used as a seasoning agent in cooking and is considered the world's most expensive spice! Interesting fragrance. Grows well in containers, lawns and naturalized areas. Crocus sativus

Really neat!

I planted these earlier this fall, and by November was worried they'd never bloom although grassy green blades had come up well. They have actually begun to bloom right in the middle of November. I'm really thrilled with the cheerful flowers at this time of year in NY, and the spice part is pretty neat too. I highly recommend trying these bulbs. Who would have thought you could grow your own saffron? I'm not a very good gardener, but most of the bulbs are blooming without trouble other than slugs and squirrels (they stole a few when first planted.)
Stellar results

I couldn't be happier! I planted these bulbs in late September, all in one large flower pot to protect them from hungry rodents. I was pretty certain that most would not bloom the first year, but to my surprise every one of them bloomed! Although you might not get a whole lot of saffron from these (150 flowers will yield about 1 gram of saffron spice), it was such a beautiful bright flower and gave enough spice to add to a couple of dishes. They all bloomed around Thanksgiving and many were enthusiastically received as gifts. I am still in awe at how beautiful they were, the stigmas were the most beautiful glowing red against the light purple petals. I can't wait to see them come up again next year!
