Description

Celebrate the Tried and True
It has been 200 years since Breck's first opened its doors, so for our Bicentennial Anniversary year, we've created a collection of crown imperials, a plant that's been a treasured part of our offering since the early days.

Crown imperials bear a unique form, rising high to add distinctive vertical interest in a mixed border. Look inside the massive Wow!-sized blooms, and you'll see an intricate flower form, featuring hazy garnet-ivory nectaries peeking out around the long, elegant stamen. After the blooms, you have unusually shaped, beautiful seed pods to anticipate.

Crown imperials are useful for other reasons, too. The slight musky odor wouldn't seem like a benefit, except that it actually deters mice, moles and other small rodents—probably the prettiest way to protect your flower beds from hungry critters. Also, bees are crazy about the blooms, because this plant is a nectar jackpot!

Crown Imperials Meet their Match
Breck's Wow!® Crown Imperial Collection blooms at the same time as our Wow!® Perennial Tulips, and the two plant forms are perfect for companion planting. Position the crown imperial bulbs in the middle of your Wow! tulip planting, and they'll shoot up high, hanging their downward-facing flowers above the tulips' upright blooms as a vertically interesting accent.

• Pollinator Friendly.
• Keeps moles and rodents away.

This collection includes:

  • 3 Rubra Maxima: Crown Imperial Maxima Lutea has been in cultivation since 1867. It grows 3' tall with large yellow flowers. Fritillaria imperialis

  • 2 Maxima Lutea: Crown Imperial Rubra Maxima has been in cultivation since 1665, winning the RHS Award of Merit in 1931 and the First Class Certificate RHS in 1944. It grows 3' tall as well, with big red blooms. Fritillaria imperialis
